Tank and liner shipping

Norwegian tank and liner shipping increased significantly during the interwar years. While Bergen was among the Norwegian cities that invested most heavily in overseas liner shipping leading up to World War II, the city fell behind in terms of tank shipping.

Nevertheless, by 1939, Bergen had the country's largest tank shipping company – Westfal-Larsen & Co. A/S. While traditional liner shipping disappeared in the first few decades after the war, Bergen developed into a major city for tank shipping, involving both the transport of crude oil and chemicals. The exhibition features a number of models of ships from the city's tank and liner fleet.
